Randy, we miss you. Your voice was possibly the greatest in country music history. God bless.
On May 2, 2013, country music legend George Jones passed away at the age of 81. As one of the most beloved and influential figures in country music history, his passing was mourned by many fans and fellow musicians alike. To pay tribute to his friend and colleague, Randy Travis took to the stage at Jones’ funeral to perform a heartfelt rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
Travis, who had himself suffered health problems in recent years, appeared emotional as he began to sing. His powerful voice filled the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee, where the service was being held. Accompanied only by a single guitar, Travis delivered a moving performance that left many in the audience in tears.
As Travis sang, images of Jones were displayed on large screens behind him, showing photos from throughout his career. The video montage included shots of Jones performing with other country music legends like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, as well as candid moments with family and friends.
As Travis reached the final verse of “Amazing Grace,” the crowd rose to their feet in a standing ovation. Though Jones was no longer with them, his memory lived on through the music he had created and the countless lives he had touched. And for those at his funeral, Randy Travis’ performance of “Amazing Grace” was a fitting tribute to a true icon of country music.
